May 11, 2022Postpartum health check: After the birth, the puerperant mother must go through a health check-up. Health control should be done on the 5th and 7th days of puerperium and in the 6th week (at the end of puerperium). During the control at puerperium, parents should be adequately informed about family planning, and it should be left to the family's choice whether to be protected or not.
Postpartum hygiene: Hands should be washed frequently. A baticon solution and medicated water is used for dressing the stitches. Cleaning should be done with toilet paper from front to back. The pads should be absorbent, soft, clean, colorless and odorless, cotton if possible, and should be changed frequently. Cotton underwear should be preferred.
The suture (if any) threads are not removed, they disappear on their own. The wound heals in 1 to 2 weeks if kept clean. If the bleeding is more than normal (if the pad is completely wet in less than 1 hour), fever rises or there is a foul odor in the discharge, you should go to a health institution. If there is swelling, redness and discharge in the suture area in those who have had a cesarean section, a healthcare provider should be consulted.
Postpartum bath: After normal delivery, the postpartum woman should take a warm shower while standing up, and if possible, every day. The postpartum mother who has had a cesarean section can take a standing shower on the day she goes home. After the bath, the bandage is removed and cotton underwear is put on.
Excretion: Urination should be performed within the first 6 hours after delivery. The need for toilet should not be postponed because the stitches will hurt.
After birth, defecation may not occur immediately. You should consume plenty of fluids by eating fiber and fiber foods. With short walks and movements, the work of the intestines can be supported.
Nutrition: It should be taken from all kinds of food in a balanced and sufficient amount, without skipping a meal. Flour, oily and fried foods should not be consumed. Particular attention should be paid to foods that are watery in terms of milk production.
Substances such as cigarettes and alcohol should never be used, and should avoid consuming tea and coffee.
rest and sleep: One of the most important factors for adequate milk production, protection from postpartum depression and a peaceful puerperium is enough rest for the mother. If possible, there should be someone at home to take care of the mother, and the only job of the mother should be to breastfeed, sleep and feed. Due to breastfeeding at night, sleep should be divided so much that a minimum of 2 hours of rest and sleep should be spared during the day. During the postpartum period, heavy work should be avoided. Resting on your back is recommended as it increases circulation.
regain the old look: The weight of the body will begin to return to its original state at the end of 6 weeks after the birth. The uterine and abdominal muscles of nursing mothers recover more easily. Outdoor walking and abdominal exercises are helpful. Exercise should be done for 20 to 30 minutes at least 3 times a week. The exercises to be done should be done after breastfeeding the baby.
Medication use: No medication should be used without the advice of a doctor. 3 months after birth is the period when iron support is required. According to the blood level measurements, the mother should be guided as a tablet or with nutritional recommendations.
Postpartum sexual intercourse: After delivery, during the puerperium (42 days), sexual intercourse should be postponed. Even if menstruation is not seen, it should be remembered that it is possible to get pregnant again when having intercourse for the first time. If a child is not desired again in the very near future, necessary precautions should be taken. Especially in breastfeeding mothers, vaginal dryness due to prolactin hormone can be seen, water-based lubricant suppositories or gels can be used. It will be comforting to inform the mother that it is a temporary situation.
Emotional state change after birth: Crying, unhappiness and anxiety may occur in the mother as a result of hormonal differences or the mother's feeling of inadequacy in baby care. These cases are called maternal blues. When it lasts more than 10 to 14 days, it is necessary to consult a specialist because of the possibility of developing postpartum depression.
Things to remember about breast milk: It should not be forgotten that all healthy mothers have enough milk for their baby! Breast milk is the most suitable food for the baby's physical and mental health. Initiating breastfeeding within the first half hour after delivery, breastfeeding at short intervals increases milk production and milk secretion. The more the baby suckles, the more milk is produced by the mother's breast. Since the body loses fluid, it must compensate for this loss by consuming plenty of fluids. A breastfed baby does not need any additional food. In the first 6 months, babies who are fed only with breast milk do not catch all microbe diseases, especially diarrhea. At the same time, breastfeeding positively affects the psychological development of the baby. Breastfeeding accelerates the return of the mother's body to its prenatal state.
Things to know about breastfeeding: Especially in the first three months, the baby should be breastfed whenever he wants. After breastfeeding, the baby should be gassed by holding it in suitable positions. The frequency of breastfeeding should be left to the baby's wishes. Every time the baby cries, it should be breastfed if it is dry and has no gas. At first, the baby often gets hungry because his stomach is small.
During breastfeeding, the breasts should be supported with a suitable cotton bra, a nipple pad or clean ironed cheesecloth should be placed for milk leaking from the nipple. The breasts may be painful, full and swollen, which may bother the mother at first. These problems disappear with the correct placement of the baby to the breast and frequent breastfeeding. During the postpartum period, a shower should be taken every day to remove bad odors due to sweat and discharge, to clean the breasts and to keep fit.
